Cuban Olympic Committee VP takes part in PASO assembly
The vice president of the Cuban Olympic
Committee, Ruperto Herrera, is taking part in the Pan-American Sports
Organization (PASO) general assembly in Toronto, Canada, which will decide the
host city of the 2019 Pan-American Games, Cuban television reported
Thursday.
Herrera is participating in the PASO assembly along with wrestler Mijain Lopez, two-time Olympic champion (Beijing 2008 and London 2012), and four-time world champion (Budapest 2005, Baku 2007, Herning 2009 and Saint Petersburg 2010).
The assembly gathers some 350 delegates from 41 Olympic committees across the continent to choose the 2019 host city, discuss the application of the Pan-American Olympic solidarity programs, and the work of the different committees for 2014.
During the opening session Wednesday, the Toronto 2015 organizing committee presented its work report.
Some 100,000 people are expected to take part in the Toronto Pan-American Games, including athletes, trainers and members of the national delegations.
The PASO general assembly will end Friday with the selection of the 2019host city from among the candidates: Lima (Peru), Santiago (Chile), La Punta (Argentina) and Ciudad Bolivar (Venezuela).
Herrera said Cuba will vote for the city that "offers the best guarantees for carrying out the games."
